Voice-over for Good: my story
In the world of voice-overs, a lot revolves around recognition and commercial success. Yet, for a while now, I’ve felt that my work could mean more. My name is Barbara Karel, and I believe in the power of a voice to contribute to a better world. From that conviction, my mission was born: Voice-over for Good.
How it started
Let’s go back to the beginning. After years of working as a voice actor for television, radio, and online media, there came a moment of reflection. Where do I stand—in my career and as a person? Although I was grateful for everything I was able to do, something was gnawing at me.
A voice has impact. So why wouldn’t I use it for something that goes beyond just commercial goals?
That’s how the idea for Voice-over for Good was born: consciously using my voice for projects that contribute to a more beautiful, fairer, and more sustainable world.
What does Voice-over for Good mean to me?
To me, it means that I choose. That I don’t just take on any job, but only work on projects that align with my values. Projects that contribute to awareness and positive change.
I prefer working with brands and organizations I truly believe in. As a Voice-Over for Good, everything I record has to feel right—not just in terms of content, but also in terms of feeling.
With Voice-over for Good, I want to give something back. That way, my work doesn’t just feel like work, but like a contribution to the future. For the generations after us.
Sustainable initiatives, social organizations, and brands with a positive impact: that’s what makes me happy. Fast fashion or gambling? I consciously pass on those.
My impact so far
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to campaigns for organizations like VluchtelingenWerk (the Dutch Council for Refugees), the Trimbos Institute, and the government. Projects that touch me and that I fully support.
The beauty of it is: I’m not just a voice, but an involved storyteller. Someone who helps convey a message that matters.
If my work gets people thinking—or even moving—then my goal is achieved.
The power of a voice
It remains special how much influence a voice can have. In a world full of stimuli and information, an authentic voice is often exactly what sticks.
With Voice-over for Good, I want to be that kind of voice. A voice that touches, provokes, and inspires.
And hopefully, I can also show that everyone can make a difference in their own way. It doesn’t have to be big—sometimes it just starts with your voice.
Finally: why I do this
For me, Voice-over for Good is more than a mission. It’s a way of working and living. My voice is not just an instrument, but a means to support positive change.
Every project I truly believe in feels like a step in the right direction.
And if my story inspires others to use their talent for something good too, then we make an impact together.
I care deeply about the world. And I wear my heart on my sleeve.
Voice-over for Good.
Love,
Bar
