It is a dream job for many, working with your voice, being self-employed, managing your own time, working from home and being creative with your voice on a daily basis. It sounds appealing – and it is. But how do you actually start a career as a Voice Actor?
I get that question quite often. In this article, I share my own experiences and insights. There are many roads that lead to success, but this is what my path looked like. And do you still have questions after reading this article? Book a live talk — I’d be happy to help you.
A pleasant voice is important, but certainly not enough. As a voice actor, you must above all possess text perception: the ability to convey a text credibly, naturally and convincingly.
Not everyone with a beautiful voice can automatically voice over well. The reverse is also true: without a feel for text, you will have difficulty mastering the Voice Over craft.
What can you do?
Find a practice text online
Record yourself (with your phone, for example)
Listen back critically
Ask yourself: does this sound natural and convincing?
An important tip: Ask for honest feedback from others. Ask explicitly for critical feedback – it will help you move forward as a Pro Voice Over.
Are you still motivated after the first test and do you get positive feedback? Then the real work begins.
Success as voice calls for:
Lots of repetition
Self-reflection
Perseverance
Record different types of texts, listen back and keep improving. The Voice Over market is competitive and clients expect quality from the first moment.
Workshops can help with this. They give insight into your level and help you develop further. In addition, you gain valuable experience and often receive a first demo.
When you’ve practiced enough, it’s time for the next step in your career:
A strong demo is essential. This is your calling card towards clients. Preferably work with an experienced studio to produce a quality demo.
You can also choose to build your own recording studio. This requires:
Investment in equipment
Knowledge of acoustics and engineering
Time to master everything properly
Good recording quality is crucial. Poor audio simply means less chance of Voice Over assignments.
Find out how you can become a successful Voice Over. The most fun profession ever. Gogogo!
With a demo and (possibly) a studio, you’re not there yet. As a pro voice actor, you also need to be found.
Provide:
A professional website
Clear positioning as a Voice Over
Good findability (SEO)
Active presence on relevant platforms
Your online presentation is your digital business card.
Voice Over assignments rarely come naturally, especially in the beginning.
What can you do?
Actively approach production companies, agencies and studios
Send personalized messages (not bulk mail)
Always include your Voice demo
In addition, you can register with voting agencies. Please note that reliable bureaus do not charge a registration fee.
Even once you receive assignments as a Voice Over, the learning process does not stop.
Continue to invest in:
Your voice and technique
Your Voice Over studio and equipment
Your marketing and online visibility
Competition within the Voice Over market continues to grow, so standing still is going backwards.
Talent
Perseverance
Time and investment
It is not a quick route to success, but for those who go full steam ahead, it can be an incredibly beautiful and free profession as a Voice Over.
My own journey was intense: with trial and error, a lot of self-education and perseverance. But in the end, it got me where I wanted to be – both professionally and personally.
