Does it still make sense to become a voice-over in the age of AI voice-over?

Good question – and one I get often.

My answer? Yes. Absolutely.
But … the profession does change. And you have to take that seriously.

If you really want to become a voice-over artist, have the talent, and feel a deep passion for the craft, then you should just go for it. Only thing is: you’re entering a world where AI is playing an increasingly larger role.

What does AI voice-over do (already very well)?

AI-generated voices are getting better – AND cheaper – at lightning speed. As a result, they are increasingly being used for:

  • telephone systems

  • budget e-learning

  • simple corporate videos

For this type of work, an AI voice-over is often “good enough”.

But this is something AI voice-over cannot do (yet)

There are still crucial things in which you as a human being make a difference:

Emotion & nuance
AI voice-over can mimic intonation, but real feeling? Vulnerability? Subtle timing? That often remains flat.
In commercials and storytelling, clients still want real voices. In fact, I am regularly asked not to sound like an AI voice-over.

Creative collaboration
Directors want to play, try, adjust.
A human voice-over thinks, improvises and surprises.
AI voice-over executes – but does not create.

Authenticity & branding
Brands are looking for a voice that belongs to them. A voice that grows with their story.
An AI voice-over is replaceable. You are not.

Specialization
Character voices, dialects, timing, sense of lyrics, a unique sound – that’s what makes a person excel.
Keep training. Always. Even after 15 years, I’m still learning every day.

What IS changing because of AI voice-overs?

Let’s face it:

  • Much low-budget work shifts to AI voice-over

  • The entry market is getting tougher

  • The bar is higher than ever

That means: you have to be better than “good enough.”

Working with AI voiceover – or not?

You can also embrace AI voiceover:

  • having your own voice cloned

  • Offer hybrid services (AI + human completion)

But that’s a choice.

I personally did not choose that.
My voice remains mine. Human, unique and temporary – as it should be. I don’t need my voice wandering around as an AI voice-over somewhere for eternity.

How do you stay relevant beyond AI voiceover?

When you enter this profession:

  • Don’t position yourself as “someone who punctuates texts”

  • Become a creative partner

  • Develop a distinct, unique style

  • Invest in a top studio and technical skills

Because honestly: if you don’t deliver fast, good and high-end …
then clients might as well use an AI voiceover.

So … does it make sense?

Yes.
But only if you:

  • are authentic

  • are creative

  • and be really good

Then you have (almost) no trouble with AI voiceover.

Indeed – I believe the rise of AI voiceover is also creating a counter-movement.
Because ultimately, people want to connect with … people.

And that’s exactly where your strength lies.
